Nextbit was the creator of the Robin phone, which debuted in 2016, and you can clearly see many similarities with the Razer Phone.
Razer Phone design
The new device is all metal with hard edges, totally rectangle, and it feels very sturdy. You’ll also notice that this phone features big bezels unlike edge-to-edge displays you see nowadays with other phones, but it’s because this is a phone designed for gamers, and gamers need that extra grip. In addition, the big bezels allows Razer to include two big front-facing speakers with Dolby Atmos support, which are arguably better than many premium mobile devices. Perhaps the best feature about the Razer Phone is the 5.7-inch LCD 1440p display with 120Hz refresh rate, which means that scrolling is fast and everything is super-sleek and smooth. Out-of-the-box, it’ll be set to 90Hz to balance between performance and battery life, but you can adjust the refresh rate manually in the settings. Razer has also developed a technology to automatically adjust the refresh rate, meaning that when you’re viewing a photo, playing a game, or watching a video that is not using 120Hz the screen will scale down to the appropriate rate. Under the hood, the Razer Phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, there is also 8GB of RAM (that is probably more than what’s on your laptop), 64GB of storage with the ability to add more storage, and a giant 4000mAh battery. If you know gaming, you also know that keeping the hardware cool is very important. On this phone, the company created a heatsink design that uses the entire metal frame to dissipate the heat and keep the processor cool. At the bottom, there is also a USB Type-C port for fast charging, and it also works as your headphone port, as there isn’t a headphone jack on this phone. If you don’t have a USB Type-C headphone, no worries, Razer is including a USB to 3.5mm jack adapter in the box. On the back side, you’ll find the same kind of the design you typically see from Razer with its three-snake logo and matte finish. In addition, you’ll also find a dual 12-megapixel camera system that works very similar than those on the iPhone. One camera has an f/1.8 lens for wide shots and the other is a telephoto f/2.6 shooter.
Razer Phone tech specs
Here’s a closer look at the tech specs of the Razer Phone.
Razer Phone software
Other than a photo app that automatically switches between lenses when zooming, Razer is not really adding many apps, so you get a near-stock Android experience. The mobile device comes with Android Nougat 7.1.1 with Google Assistant, and the Nova Launcher that is very fast and super customizable experience. Android 8 Oreo will be available for the Razer Phone, but not this year.
Razer Phone release date
Overall the Razer Phone is big, but it’s a great device built with gamers in mind with all the decisions on hardware, design, and features. However, as it turns out a lot of those decisions also make a great every day phone. It’s expected to start shipping on November 17 in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, France, Denmark and Sweden, and it’ll be priced at $699.
